Jon Kay had “sad news” to share with BBC Breakfast viewers on Tuesday (6 May), as he returned to TV screens alongside co-star Sally Nugent.
As Jon and Sally brought the latest headlines to BBC viewers, Jon revealed that a motorcycle crash had occurred in Cheshire over the weekend, leading to two people losing their lives.
“We’ve also got some sad news this morning, because police are investigating after two super bike riders died in a crash involving eleven motorcycles at a British superbikes race in Cheshire over the weekend,” he announced.
“Organisers said the two men had severe head and chest injuries. John is here, and can tell us more,” Jon added, as his BBC Breakfast co-star John Watson proceeded to take over.
John Watson explained more about the tragic incident, announcing that Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, were both fatally injured on the first lap of the race.

He also read out a statement from MSVR and the Motorcycle Racing Control Board, in which they said they are “investigating the full circumstances of the incident in conjunction with the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary”.
The incident happened during the British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park on Monday, 5 May.
Shane was racing for the Astro JJR Hippo Suzuki team, while Owen raced for the Rapid Honda.
A statement released by MSVR read: “Owen Jenner, 21, was initially treated trackside and then taken to the circuit medical centre, where despite further resuscitation treatment he died from a catastrophic head injury.
“Shane Richardson, 29, was initially treated trackside and then taken to the circuit medical centre before being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest injuries. He died prior to arrival.
“Tom Tunstall, 47, was initially treated on the track and was taken to the circuit medical centre. He was later transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with significant back and abdominal injuries.”

BBC viewers reacted to the sad news on social media, with one person saying: “Heartbreaking.thinking of all the families involved,” while another commented: “Very sad news.”
Another person added: “That’s heart-breaking. Racing’s dangerous enough without losing lads who’ve got their whole lives ahead—proper tragic.”
